Tom Holland Explains How His Spider-Man Will be DIfferent

As an actor, stepping into a role that has been played by different actors in previous films before. The new actor must simultaneously live up to the expectations set by his or her predecessors while still giving a performance distinct enough to stand out from what has come before.

Tom Holland finds himself in just such a position as he takes on the mantle of Spider-Man, previously held by two other actors. Tobey Maguire first played Spider-Man in Sam Raimi's trilogy of movies, Spider-Man, Spider-Man 2, and Spider-Man 3. Andrew Garfield then took over the role when Sony rebooted the franchise and starred in Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Holland has certainly been influenced by both Maguire and Garfield, but he's also hoping to present Spider-Man movie fans with something new, or so he tells The Hollywood Reporter.

"You've seen the billionaire, the scientist, the soldier. Now it's time to see the kid," Holland says. "And every decision we make on set is based off how would a kid react in this situation, so every fight scene we have is designed in a way that's almost child-friendly, so he never actually punches anyone. It's all done kind of by accident. I think the biggest difference is his youth and innocence."

We saw some of the new Spider-Ma's innocence when Tony Stark came to his home to recruit him during the events of Captain America: Civil War. While Spider-Man certainly held his own against Team Captain America, you could still see how starstruck and in awe of Captain America and the other Avengers Spider-Man was.

Holland will further explore Spider-Man's youthful innocence in his first Spider-Man movie for Sony Pictures, Spider-Man: Homecoming, in 2017, which will see Peter Parker basking in Tony Stark's presence once again. It should be interesting to see how much of Iron Man's swagger is absorbed by the impressionable young Spider-Man.
