X-Men: Dark Phoenix Might Include Genosha

20th Century Fox promises to take their X-Men cinematic universe in a whole new direction with next year's X-Men: Dark Phoenix. And now, a new rumor suggests that that new path could involve a rather noteworthy mutant location.

Nerdist is reporting that Dark Phoenix could introduce the country of Genosha to the X-Men universe. The fictional African island, which was introduced in the comics in the 1980s, was struck with Mutant apartheid. The country was later taken over by Magneto, who ruled the mutant paradise until it was exterminated by Sentinels in 2001's 'E if For Extinction' storyline.

If this rumor does hold true, it won't be the first cinematic appearance of Genosha. The island already briefly appeared in X-Men and X-Men: The Last Stand.

While fans will have to wait and see exactly how Genosha is introduced, there is a chance it could play a key part in the role Magneto (Michael Fassbender) has in Dark Phoenix. The popular character wasn't involved in the Dark Phoenix Saga in the comics, but early reports are hinting that he will take on a "cult leader" role - possibly involving his group of followers, the Acolytes - in the film.

With the inclusion of both the Acolytes and Genosha in the film, Magneto's sort of mutant uprising could easily bring him into the fold - and possibly have a hand in setting the larger Dark Phoenix plot in motion. Fans will just have to stay tuned as more information is revealed about the upcoming film.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be a direct sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse. The film will take place in the 1990s and will be inspired by "The Dark Phoenix Saga," the most popular X-Men story of all time.

Fox attempted to adapt "The Dark Phoenix Saga" once previously, in X-Men: The Last Stand. The attempt was not well-received by fans.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix currently has a 3.72 out of 5 ComicBook.com User Anticipation Rating. Let us know how excited you are for X-Men: Dark Phoenix by giving the film your own user anticipation rating below.
