X-Men: Dark Phoenix Audition Videos Hint At Recasting Rogue?

04/29/2017 02:04 pm EDT

Audition videos for X-Men: Dark Phoenix have been discovered online.

The audition videos, submitted under the film's working title "Teen Spirit," come from three young actors. Rarmian Newton is an Australian actor who has appeared on The Family and Dance Academy. Alexa Swinton is a Canadian-American actress who appears on Billions. Paul Mescal is an Irish newcomer.

Newton is auditioning for a character referred to as Shane. Mescal is going for one referred to as Sam. Swinton's is more interesting, as she is going for a character named Marie.

While any or all of these may be code names and not actual character names, it is hard not to look at "Marie" and wonder if this is a young Rogue, since Marie is Rogue's real name. Swinton certainly looks the part, and with X-Men: Dark Phoenix being set in the 1990s she is young enough to play Rogue at an age appropriate age relative to the age Anna Paquin played her as in the original X-Men, although appropriately aging characters has not been a major concern for the X-Men movies franchise in the past.

The other two character are harder to make out. The most prominent mutant named Sam in the Marvel Comics universe is Cannonball, but he'll be featured in New Mutants. He's also not Irish, as this Sam apparently is. If Sam is a codename, it's hard to tell who for. The most prominent Irish mutant is Banshee, who appeared in X-Men: First Class but was killed between then and X-Men: Days of Future Past.

There are no prominent mutants named Shane, and Newton's lines for the audition don't give much about the character away. What's more interesting is that the scene he's reading for seems to suggest that Xavier's school is under siege (again). Perhaps this time by the Shi'ar Empire, coming for Jean Grey?

You can watch each of the videos below (via Omega Underground).

This is all speculation, but at the very least it is not hard to see Fox recasting Rogue since she was one of the most prominent original trilogy characters and they have already recast most of the original trilogy leads. Perhaps this time around fans can get the super-strong fighter version of Rogue that they've been pining for.
