Welcome to the 2017 ComicBook.com Awards, where we here at ComicBook.com take a look back at 2017 and select the stories from comic books and related media that we expect will remain in our hearts and minds long after the year has come to a close.

Here we're talking movies and focusing on their visual effects. These are the digital and practical effects that bring to life larger characters and make a superhero's superpowers into reality. Without this movie magic, the current comic book movie boom may never have happened, and there were plenty of fine examples of why these effects are so important this year.

And the winner of Best Visual Effects is...

Thor: Ragnarok!

Thor: Ragnarok was basically a complete reinvention of the Thor film mythology within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and that includes the film's look, which traded the shining, science fantasy spires of Asgard for the dystopian, totalitarian squalor of Sakaar. And let's not forget that this film brought to life Thor's arena combat with the Hulk, and the Green Goliath has never looked better.

Thor: Ragnarok was one of three Marvel Studios movies nominated in this category. Also nominated were Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. which kept up the stylish visuals that helped make the first Guardians of the Galaxy such a big success, and Spider-Man: Homecoming, which seamlessly integrated the web-slinger into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Other nominees include Wonder Woman, a divine-looking debut for DC's heroine, and Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which delivered more tight spy action.
