Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice Sneak Peek Detailed Analysis

On Monday night, Warner Bros. released a forty-nine second sneak peek of Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice during Gotham. The sneak peek consisted of a single scene involving Batman and Superman.

In the scene, Batman is in a different costume than we normally see him wearing. We know from the Batman V. Superman toys that were shown at New York Comic Con that this trench coat-wearing Batman is called Knightmare Batman.

In the sequence, Knightmare Batman is chained up along with a couple other people in some type of underground bunker. There is a hallway full of soldiers, and Superman drops down from an opening at the top of the bunker. He lands with a thud, sending dust flying up into the air.

The soldiers kneel before Superman. With an angry, disgusted look on his face, Superman walks up to Batman, who looks genuinely afraid. Superman sneers and reaches forward and pulls off Batman's cowl. As a frightened Bruce Wayne stares ahead, Superman turns and glares at the cowl he is now holding in his hand.

After the sequence, there is a list of credits, which are notable because they contain a change to the Batman credit. Instead of just Bob Kane's name, the Batman credit now says created by Bob Kane with Bill Finger. It's the result of an agreement entered into between DC Entertainment and Bill Finger's estate, which finally gives credit to the co-creator of Batman.

Of course, most are assuming that the entire sequence in the Batman V. Superman sneak peek is a dream/nightmare. The sequence is very similar to the dream sequence that Superman had in Man of Steel. In that sequence, a black-costumed Superman had visions of himself sinking into a pile of human skulls. It was meant to represent the potential for even the greatest champions to grow corrupt.

Since this scene is likely a dream sequence, there is not that much analysis that can be taken from it. The biggest question is whether it is Superman or Batman's nightmare. One could argue the fact that Batman looks scared would indicate it is his nightmare. Is Batman's biggest nightmare his fear of Superman?

However, would a man like Batman be scared even in his dreams? Could it actually be a continuation of Superman's nightmare from Man of Steel? Maybe, it is Superman's worst nightmare that he turns into an evil dictator.

One other take away from the sequence is that there is more to this scene in the first Batman V. Superman Comic Con trailer. In one scene from the Comic Con trailer, Knightmare Batman appears to be emerging from a bunker into a war zone. Knightmare Batman then fights some Superman soldiers, who are armed with machine guns. He even appears to break the neck of one of the Superman soldiers.

Since Knightmare Batman appears to be emerging from a bunker in the Comic Con trailer scene, could it occur after the sneak peek scene? Could Knightmare Batman have found a way to escape from Superman and emerge from the bunker, where he is met by more Superman soldiers? It's also possible that Knightmare Batman is emerging from a different bunker in the Comic Con trailer, and he is subdued by the Superman soldiers, meaning the sneak peek scene happens next. Either way, it appears to indicate that there is a rather lengthy dream sequence in Batman V. Superman.

Of course, there is always the remote possibility it's not a dream sequence at all. It's possible that it could be a look into an alternate reality. It's also possible that Lex Luthor either takes control of Superman or creates and evil clone of Superman. There is one sequence in the Comic Con trailer where Superman kneels in front of Lex Luthor. The Superman that kneels in front of Luthor has the same evil scowl on his face that we see from the Superman in the bunker.

Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice is scheduled to be released in movie theaters on March 25, 2016.
