Bride Of Frankenstein To Be Helmed By Beauty And The Beast Director

Universal is quickly constructing its monster universe, and part of that equation is the upcoming Bride of Frankenstein. The project currently has no director attached, but that could change very soon according to recent reports, and if it happens it could be a great get for Universal.

The Tracking Board has confirmed that that Beauty and the Beast's Bill Condon has entered talks to helm the project. Condon's Disney project is still raking up the box office receipts at theaters, recently soaring over $1 Billion in total box office. It might seem odd then for Condon to jump to a horror franchise, but Condon has roots in the genre and has previously said that the original Bride of Frankenstein in 1935 is among his favorite monster movies.

Condon has also helmed films like Mr. Holmes, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Parts 1 and 2, Dreamgirls, Kinsey, and Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh, as well as Gods and Monsters, which depicted the last days of original Frankenstein director James Whale.

The project joins a list of in-development titles like Creature from the Black Lagoon, Van Helsing, and The Mummy, which will kick off the universe later this year. Tom Cruise is joined by a cast including Annabelle Wallis (upcoming King Arthur, television's Peaky Blinders), Jake Johnson (Jurassic World), Courtney B. Vance (TV's American Crime Story: The People V. O.J. Simpson), Sofia Boutella (Star Trek Beyond ), and Oscar® winner Russell Crowe (Gladiator).

The creative team on this action-adventure event is led by director/producer Alex Kurtzman and producer Chris Morgan, who have been instrumental in growing some of the most successful franchises of the past several years—with Kurtzman writing or producing entries in the Transformers, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible series, and Morgan being the narrative engineer of the Fast & Furious saga as it has experienced explosive growth from its third chapter on. Sean Daniel, who produced the most recent Mummy trilogy, produces alongside Kurtzman and Morgan.

The Mummy opens in theaters June 9, 2017.
