Colin Firth's 'Kingsman: The Golden Circle' Return Wasn't Initially Planned

Fans going to see Kingsman: The Golden Circle this weekend might think the return of Colin Firth's Harry Hart character was planned all along -- but it wasn't.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Firth revealed his character was never meant to return. The death fans saw in the 2015 film was intended to be permanent despite being undone in surprisingly organic fashion in the film's sequel. Check out Firth's perspective in the video above or continue reading below!

"It wasn't but it was quite early," Firth said. "I think Matthew really wanted to be conclusive. You kill of a loved character and I don't think he wanted to cheat so he meant it at the time. Just the life that the relationships had brought to the whole thing, I think he felt, 'We're finding a way to revive.' I think you're right, I think he earns it. It's not some facile thing where it just happens by magic."

The Secret Service comics co-creator Dave Gibbons tells ComicBook.com, however, his original story never planned to bring Harry Hart back. Still, he supports director Matthew Vaughn and writer Jane Goldman's choices.

"This was where the comic book and the movie diverged," Gibbons said. "Because in the comic book, the oldest spy is shot, and he is dead. We were never ever going to bring him back. And in the first Kingsman movie it kind of seems like there'd be no way to bring him back. And I frankly was surprised at how elegantly they did it, and how well it worked."

Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens in theaters on September 22, 2017.
