Edge Of Tomorrow 2 Will End The Series

Tom Cruise is one of the most successful movie stars in the world.

Though he has a long list of impressive film credits to his name, the actor tends to be the foundation for franchise movies spawning a series of sequels.

Cruise is set to appear in the first film in a shared universe in The Mummy coming out this summer, and he's currently filming the sixth film in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

Cruise will also reprise his role as Bill Cage in the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow alongside Emily Blunt and director Doug Liman. Liman spoke with MTV's Happy Sad Confused podcast about making the new film, which is set to be titled Live, Die, Repeat And Repeat.

"I see this as a two-movie franchise; there's the completion of the story we set up in the first movie and the relationships between Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt—because, remember, at the end of the first movie, she doesn't know who he is—and that's gonna launch us into an amazing new direction," Liman said. "It does pick up right where we left off, but it doesn't keep going forward, because we'd screw with time, because the aliens screwed with time."

Liman's words are refreshing considering the trend to make the second film in a series serve as set up for the potential third film. Many trilogies have this function, such as the Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean movies. But Liman makes it sound like the next film in this series will also be the last.

While we do believe Liman means what he says, plans often change in Hollywood and executives could always add on another film with a new director at the helm if they want to chase a series' success.

Hopefully the sequel to Edge of Tomorrow has a good, self-contained story that's worthy of the first film.

You can see Cruise next in The Mummy, opening in theaters June 9.
