Matthew Vaughn Looks at 'Kingsman' as the Beatles

Matthew Vaughn has a very specific perspective when it comes to his work on Kingsman: The Golden Circle. The director saw making the sequel as getting the band back together and that band? Just so happens to be The Beatles.

In an interview with ComicBook.com, Vaughn explained that bringing back Colin Firth as Harry Hart turned out to be something that he absolutely had to do because for him, the whole band was necessary to make the sequel. You can check out the video above.

"This is a really pretentious answer, but I look at Kingsman as if the Kingsmen are the Beatles and I'm George Martin," Vaughn said. "I started writing thinking 'right, second album this is going to be tough."

One of the things that made putting together the film difficult was the absence of Colin Firth as Harry Hart. In Kingsman: The Secret Service, Firth's character dies just as his comic book counterpart does. Firth even confirmed that he wasn't originally planned to be in the sequel, but when Vaughn sat down to write the sequel he figured out that despite Harry Hart's presumed death, he was what the movie needed. According to Vaughn, Firth is his Paul McCartney.

"He's [Mark Strong] George Harrison ... Taron is Lennon," Vaughn explained. "Who's the fourth? Colin is McCartney. And I had somebody else as Ringo and I can't remember. But the bottom line was I started writing it going 'this isn't working. I can't make it without Colin, he's my rhythm guitar. He needs to be there.'"

Once Vaughn had his Beatles together, sans a specific Ringo, that's when the film truly came to life and even though the director didn't set out to make Kingsman: The Golden Circle better than its predecessor, he did say that having his "triangle" together is what makes the movie work.

"I do say what Kingsman is, is the three, that triangle, the three of them, together it's the emotional connection and the humor and the multi-tonal experience they give you that makes Kingman: The Golden Circle work, it's that triangle going through the craziness."

You can see how the craziness plays out when Kingsman: The Golden Circle opens in theaters on September 22, 2017.
