Letters to Cleo's Kay Hanley Teases Josie & the Pussycats News

Kay Hanley, the Letters To Cleo singer who famously provided the vocals for 2001's Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack, is teasing news about the cult-favorite movie...but she can't say what.

"Got some fairly ridiculous Josie & the Pussycats news that I don't think I'm allowed to talk about yet BUT I WANT TO," Hanley tweeted, sharing a GIF from the film.

Co-director Harry Elfont quoted the tweet and said simply, "Soon."

Fans of the movie are already in her mentions speculating that there could be a Blu-ray release for the film on the horizon. Another solid possibility, especially with Hanley being the first person to tweet about it, is that the soundtrack could be making a comeback.

The Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack is much-loved by the movie's fans, but has been out of print for years. It is not currently available on digital formats like Amazon Music, Apple Music, and Spotify. A deal for the soundtrack might be the most likely thing to come out of this, as while the movie was a box office failure, the soundtrack went gold, selling more than half a million copies.

A cameo on Riverdale for Hanley would not be out of the question, although Elfont has nothing to do with the show, so his response would seem unusual if that were the announcement.

Actors associated with Riverdale have repeatedly said they would love cameos by the 2001 cast.

The film, which starred Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid, centered on a group of teenage girls from Riverdale who are swept up in the hype of a massive commercial launch for their new album after a big record company loses its biggest act in a tragic accident and has to replace them quickly. The movie was a scathing critique on the nature of the record industry in the days immediately before digital music collapsed most of it completely. Indie film icons Parker Posey, Alan Cumming, and Missi Pyle also had roles in the movie.

Josie and the Pussycats' comic is nearing its final issue, but the characters live on in Riverdale, the CW's noir-tinged teen drama set in the world of Archie Comics.

ComicBook.com once named Josie and the Pussycats as one of the most underrated comic book movies of all time.
