New Cars 3 Trailer Takes Lightning McQueen Back To Where It All Began

Pixar has released a brand new trailer for Cars 3, which will race into theaters next month, and it features Lightning McQueen heading back to Radiator Springs to lick his wounds and Cruz Ramirez, a young Hispanic female race car, teaching the old dog some new tricks.

Keep in mind, the trailer above is an international one. So unless you speak Japanese, you won't understand a lick of what they're saying. Additionally, I believe this trailer also features the main theme for the film's Japanese release that is performed by singer/songwriter Tamio Okuda.

In a recent interview, first-time director Brain Tee revealed how the story evolved and the character of Cruz evolved throughout the filmmaking process. "Early on we did not have Cruz figured out as a character, that's for sure," Tee told Slash Film. "Cruz existed. Cruz was a male character when the story took place in central California. Cruz was a farmer, and it was completely different. [Lightning] McQueen was just on a journey through the central valley of California and he happened upon Cruz and was kinda handcuffed with Cruz throughout the journey.

"We always had a mentor story," he continued. "We always had a mentor story looking at McQueen and Doc's reletionship, and then looking at McQueen and Cruz's relationship. Then the story when through complete different changes where we kept that mentor-ship, but we moved across the country, went to the South and were looking more at McQueen's career as a racer. Cruz eventually became female."

Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez (voice of Cristela Alonzo), with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn't through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing's biggest stage!

The voice cast also features Armie Hammer as Jackson Storm, Larry The Cable Guy as Mater, Bonnie Hunt as Sally Carrera, Cheech Marin as Ramone, Michael Wallis as Sheriff, and Paul Dooley Sarge.

Directed by Brian Fee (storyboard artist Cars, Cars 2) and produced by Kevin Reher (A Bug's Life, La Luna short), Cars 3 cruises into theaters on June 16, 2017.
