Power Rangers Director Explains Goldar's Redesign

For longtime fans, the Power Rangers movie version of Goldar was a big departure from the original series, debuting to mixed reactions.

There was a reason behind the redesign, however, centering around the fact that director Dean Israelite wanted to give Goldar a real purpose for existing rather than just being another minion.

"I said with my production designer language lets sort of push the envelope on him. And it seemed to start ... and I said, we always have to go back to the mythology we're creating. And the mythology that we are creating is that Rita can ... has control over elements around her. And if she has control over the elements around her that's how she physicalizes and creates the Putties that are then made out of whatever environment is around her and that logic should hold true to Goldar and Goldar then should then come out of this debunked gold mine that the whole movie is set around."

It also extended to making the creature's design different than what has already come before.

"Well, the honest answer is that I feel like we've just seen a gargoyle type monster so many times now since the show has started. And my goal, with the movie, was to really give Power Rangers its own aesthetic and its own language. And you'll notice the each of the Zords, and the space ship, and Alpha 5, and even Zordon ... they're all very organic. All the shapes are very organic. They're very alive. They're biomechanical."

Israelite compared this to the visual sense of other projects in the same genre, saying "And that's quite different from if you really study stuff in Transformers or even Star Trek and Star Wars. Where, ya know, there's a power pack element to all of that. Stuff is very angular. There's much pitch to it. I really wanted to ... and even the Marvel stuff has that kind of feel to it. Now I think, although it's very successful, I thought ours deserved its own language. It's own designed language."

"And so it all seems to put together to me unless we decide we're going to push the envelope knowing we're going to get stuff pushed back," said Israelite. "We came up with this design that felt to me both terrifying and kind of beautiful at the same time."

The action-packed, coming of age feature film Saban's Power Rangers will morph onto Digital HD June 13 and on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack (plus Blu-ray and Digital HD), Blu-ray Combo Pack (plus DVD and Digital HD), DVD and On Demand June 27 from Lionsgate. As part of the 24-year-old global phenomenon and based on the five Rangers from the original TV series, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,", the reimagined movie features a modern generation of Rangers including Dacre Montgomery (TV's "Stranger Things") as Jason the Red Ranger, Naomi Scott (The 33) as Kimberly the Pink Ranger, RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger, and Becky G. (Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising) as Trini the Yellow Ranger, as they attempt to stop the evil and unpredictable Rita Repulsa (played by Elizabeth Banks, The Hunger Games Franchise) from destroying their city…and ultimately the world. Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad") as Zordon, and Bill Hader (Finding Dory) as Alpha 5 train the Rangers to morph and master their powers as a united team.

The Saban's Power Rangers DVD will include exclusive audio commentary with director Dean Israelite and writer John Gatins, and deleted/alternate/extended scenes and outtakes. Saban's Power Rangers will be available on 4K Ultra HD Combo Pack, Blu-ray Combo Pack, and DVD for the suggested retail price of $42.99, $39.99, and $29.95, respectively.
