Zachary Quinto On Whether Star Trek 4 Is Still Happening

Despite having an impressive 84% fresh rating, Star Trek Beyond is the lowest rated film in the J.J. Abrams-produced series -- 2009's Star Trek is best with 95% and 2013's Star Trek Into Darkness sits in second with 86%. More importantly, though, Star Trek Beyond was also the weakest of the three at the box office, earning $343.4M all together. While that wasn't far off from what the 2009 film did ($385.6M), it was a huge step backwards when compared to the $467.3M haul Star Trek Into Darkness brought in.

And since Star Trek doesn't have the same international appeal as other big-budget franchises, Paramount Pictures isn't rushing to get the next installment made. A script is in the works, but Zachary Quinto, who portrays Spock, isn't confident -- though he is hopeful -- that it'll get a green-light.

"I know that they are working on a script for another one," Quinto told Today (via WGTC) while promoting his new movie Aardvark, "and we'll see how that all plays out, but the nice thing about that experience is that the time in between those big tentpole films allows us to go off and cultivate a lot of different creative experiences for ourselves. … I'm hopeful that we'll do another one, but there's no guarantee."

From Paramount Pictures and Skydance, Star Trek Beyond is a Bad Robot, Sneaky Shark, Perfect Storm Entertainment production. The film starrred Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoë Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Simon Pegg, Anton Yelchin and Idris Elba.

The third film in the franchise series was produced by J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci, Lindsey Weber, and Justin Lin. It was executive produced by Jeffrey Chernov, David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, and Tommy Harper. Based upon Star Trek created by Gene Roddenberry, the screenplay was written by Simon Pegg and Doug Jung.
