Star Trek: Discovery Isn't The First Time Starfleet Officers Have Worn Armor

Star Trek: Discovery is already a show that's gaining a reputation for breaking Star Trek norms, whether it's using someone ranked below captain as the main character or for threatening to kill off cast members.

Another way many fans though Star Trek: Discovery was breaking the norms was by giving Starfleet officers on away missions armor, as seen in a photo of Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and Captain Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) preparing to beam down from a transporter room.

However, some fan shave noted that's not actually the first time Starfleet officers have used armor. While it is certainly unusual to see an armored officer on Star Trek, the security officers who appeared in Star Trek: The Motion Picture wore full armor. This armored look can be seen again in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.

In addition to these Star Trek: The Original Series cast movies, commandos are seen in Star Trek: Enterprise also wearing body armor.

It seems the idea that Starfleet simply doesn't use armor mostly stems from the era of Star Trek: The Next Generation and beyond. However, considering Star Trek: Discovery takes place between Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: The Original Series in the timeline, it makes sense that the officers on the series would use armored uniforms.

Star Trek: Discovery is headed to this week's Comic-Con International: San Diego. Sonequa Martin-Green, Jason Isaacs, Doug Jones, Shazad Latif, Mary Wiseman, Anthony Rapp, and James Frain will all be in attendance, alongside Executive Producers Alex Kurtzman, Gretchen J. Berg, Aaron Harberts, Heather Kadin, and Akiva Goldsman for a panel moderated by guest star Rainn Wilson, who plays Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd on Star Trek: Discovery.

Set 10 years prior to the five-year mission of the Enterprise in Star Trek: The Original Series, Star Trek: Discovery follows the adventures of Starfleet on their missions to discover new worlds and new lifeforms, and one Starfleet officer who must learn that to truly understand all things alien, you must first understand yourself. The series will feature a new ship, new characters, and new missions while embracing the same ideology and hope for the future that inspired a generation of dreamers and doers.

Star Trek: Discovery's cast also includes Jason Isaacs as the starship Discovery's Captain Lorca, Rainn Wilson as Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd, James Frain as Sarek, Spock's father, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, the captain of another Starfleet ship, the Shenzhou, which will be important to the plot of Star Trek: Discovery. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp both play science officers. Mary Wiseman will play a final year Starfleet Academy cadet.

Star Trek: Discovery premieres Sept. 24, 2017.
