Adam Driver Says The Last Jedi Creates New Rules For The Franchise

Building off of the new storylines and characters established in Lucasfilm's seventh installment in the franchise, Star Wars: The Last Jedi carries high expectations to push the universe into a new direction.

The sequel trilogy star Adam Driver believes the film has the right director for the job and recently praised Rian Johnson's script as "remarkable." Driver will reprise the role of Ben Solo AKA Kylo Ren, continuing his campaign of destruction against the Resistance while backed by the might of the First Order.

Driver communicated through email with the Huffington Post and heaped praise on the new developments being made in The Last Jedi.

"[Johnson] created new rules for the Star Wars universe and balanced the familiar and unfamiliar very adeptly while respecting that his audience can handle ambiguity. Which you can see in his previous films. Characters and story are his priority," Driver wrote.

While it's unlikely the film will actually use the fan-favorite term "Grey Jedi," it seems like those philosophies could be among the themes Johnson will explore in the follow up to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

In the trailer, Luke Skywalker and Rey's voiceovers address the balance in the Force between the Light side and the Dark side, before Luke shockingly proclaims that "it's time for the Jedi to end."

Could we be seeing a new dichotomy play out in the ultimate battle for the fate of the galaxy? Or maybe some new concepts will be introduced altogether? Johnson is a clever filmmaker, having previously helmed genre-bending films like Brothers Bloom, Brick, and Looper. We're eager to find out what he'll do given the keys to the Star Wars franchise.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters December 15.
