Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Writer Gary Whitta Would Like to Write for Star Trek

With Rogue One: A Star Wars Story now an unqualified success, pulling in over a billion dollars at the global box office, the questions are starting to be asked about what's next for everyone involved. While some are obvious, like the team at ILM continuing work on the yearly Star Wars films, or some of the actors who had several projects lined up after the film, others are less so. One of the latter are writer Gary Whitta, credited with the story alongside John Knoll for Rogue One. While he's working on adapting the comic book about warrior mice Mouse Guard, he has his eyes on another major franchise (and teases some others).

"One of [the other franchises I want to work on] is definitely the amazing Mouse Guard graphic novels by David Petersen, and I'm lucky enough to be adapting them as a feature film for 20th Century Fox right now," the writer said in an interview with Loot Crate for their most recent subscription box. "Beyond that if I were ever given the chance to write something in the Star Trek universe I would jump at it."

He'd be far from the only one to work in both venerable Star franchises, as most notably J.J. Abrams and Simon Pegg have both been involved heavily in the recent reignitions of both. Whitta also hinted that he has some unannounced projects that will scratch geek itches for him.

"I'm actually working on a couple of things right now that fit into this category as well," he teased, "but I'm not allowed to talk about them. Ha!"

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is in theaters now. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire's ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
