Mark Hamill Says Alec Guinness Slapped Him While Filming Star Wars

Obi-Wan Kenobi might have been a peaceful Jedi Knight who would only resort to violence when necessary, but the actor who portrayed them wasn't afraid to use force to set the record straight.

While speaking at Disney's D23 Expo in promotion of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Mark Hamill revealed a story about working with Alec Guinness on the original Star Wars movie that was released over 40 years ago.

"I kept calling him 'Sir Alec' over and over again." Hamill said while speaking with Yahoo! Movies. "And one day he reached out … he tapped my face and then BOOM! He slapped me pretty hard. And I went 'What was all that about?' 'Cause I kept calling him 'Sir Alec.' And he said, 'I want to be known by my name, not my accolade.'"

Some people might take that as a sign of disrespect, but Hamill brushed it off.

"I thought, 'what a classy guy,'" he said. "Now, what am I supposed to call him? Big Al? And I said that to him. He loves that, you know, he loves irreverent humor. And he thought Americans are, of course, very brash and sometimes have struggle with our impulse control."

Say what you will, but Hamill is probably one of the few people that can look at getting slapped as being an honor. It's probably a bit easier when acting legend Alec Guinness is doing the slapping.

Either way, we appreciate him telling the humorous story about the actor that played his mentor throughout three films, and we're excited to see where Hamill's character goes in the next film.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi opens in theaters December 15.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
