Star Wars Celebration 2017 Badge Art Focuses on Episode VIII, Rebels

The badge art from Star Wars Celebration Orlando, the 2017 edition of the now-annual convention for all things Star Wars, was revealed on StarWars.com Wednesday, as drawn by artist Paul Shipper, who said he's "been a huge Star Wars fan" for life. The art will appear on the badges for the convention, with unique images for each of the 18 badges, 12 of which were revealed today.

The badges revealed focus almost entirely on the Star Wars Rebels animated series and Star Wars: Episode VIII, both of which should be featured heavily at Celebration Orlando. Jyn Erso from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story was the only representative of that film in the revealed badges.

Shipper recognized the unique pressure of doing official art for the 40th Anniversary of Star Wars, and said he worked to make sure he "was pleasing everybody at Lucasfilm," knowing that if they liked them, "hopefully the fans will enjoy them as well." His art features a mixture of photorealistic and hand-drawn aesthetics, almost looking like a filter from a photo-sharing app.

He also mentioned that ironically the Rebels characters were a bit harder for him to draw, because he usually goes for a photorealistic look and isn't used to drawing animated characters. "So it was slightly different, and it was a funny place to start," he said.

Each image features the insignia that charcter is most associated with: the Rebel Phoenix in its various forms, the cogs of the Empire and the First Order, in the background framing the character.

Revealed characters are: Ezra, Hera, Kanan, Sabine, and Zeb from Rebels, along with Imperial villain Grand Admiral Thrawn, Jyn from Rogue One, and Finn, Rey, Luke Skywalker, Poe Dameron, and Kylo Ren from Star Wars: Episode VIII. Shipper also mentioned one for BB-8, so hopefully that means all six of the unrevealed ones - or at least a few more of them - will be droids (K-2SO, C-3PO, R2-D2, and Chopper all come instantly to mind).
