Disney & Lucasfilm Release First Star Wars Forces Of Destiny Episode

Announced earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration, the latest series in the Star Wars animated universe is Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, which focuses on the female heroes from a galaxy far, far away. The first installment, "Sands of Jakku," can be viewed above!

One of the interesting elements about this new series of animated shorts is that it embraces a more traditional-looking 2D animation style instead of the 3D animation seen in recent series like Star Wars Rebels and The Clone Wars. What makes the project even more exciting is that actresses like Daisy Ridley, Felicity Jones, and Ashley Eckstein will all be voicing Rey, Jyn Erso, and Ahsoka Tano.

The project is aimed to showcase the everyday heroism that these characters demonstrate, in hopes of inspiring a younger audience to follow the right path when presented with challenges in their lives.

One of the series writers, Jennifer Muro, recently spoke with Den of Geek about the project and the impact Star Wars has had on her own personal life.

"Going into it, I want to represent everyday heroism and the heroic moments that shape these characters in different ways," Muro revealed. "Leia would handle a situation one way, Ahsoka another way, Jyn another way. That was the goal all along."

The series will also feature an episode focused on Princess Leia at the time of the original trilogy, who will be voiced by Shelby Young.

Muro explained, "We've lived with [Leia] longer than any other character. It's about keeping true to her voice and to Carrie's voice."

Each installment in the series will be two-to-three minutes long, but considering the popularity of animated series in the Star Wars universe and the planned two-part special coming to TV on July 9, it's possible the premise could extend beyond YouTube.

The series will show audiences moments of beloved characters that we've never seen before, like Sabine Wren's life before her debut in Star Wars Rebels and Ahsoka's adventures outside of what we saw in The Clone Wars.

If there wasn't already enough talent in Star Wars: Forces of Destiny, The Force Awakens' Lupita Nyong'o will narrate the series as Maz Kanata.
