Things You May Have Missed In New 'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' Trailer

The Star Wars saga utilizes a lot of recurring motifs. One of the most direct instances of the saga coming full circle is Kylo Ren's brazen attempts to live up to his grandfather's legacy.

And though Darth Vader eventually turned back to the Light Side and ended the brutal reign of the Emperor with his dying act, Ren likely refers to that as a 'momentary lapse in judgement.'

The Force Awakens made it pretty clear that he wants to fulfill Darth Vader's mission to eradicate the Resistance to a totalitarian regime and "finish what [he] started." And those desires are reflected in some very distinct imagery from the new film.

A scene that appears to show Kylo Ren and a squad of First Order troopers invading the Resistance base on Crait is very similar to the scene in which Darth Vader and the Clone Troopers invade the Jedi Temple on Corouscant after Order 66 was executed in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith.

Kylo Ren's Shuttle

Sure, we know the leader of the Knights of Red gets a brand new TIE Fighter model in the new movie, referred to as the TIE Silencer. But what about his old ship?

After being featured in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many fans have added variations of the First Order shuttle to their collections. Maybe they were worried it wouldn't appear in the new film.

But one of the first shots in the trailer shows that's not the case, with the shuttle leading the charge on Crait flanked by a cadre of the new Heavy Assault Walkers.

Though it remains to be seen if the ship will play a huge role in the new film, but it could be safe to assume so with it appearing both in the trailer and on the brand new poster. Those are the unmistakable wings of Kylo Ren's shuttle.

But, Kylo might not even be on that ship for the scene — it could be reserved for any top officer such as General Hux. Either way, at least it's in the movie.

Crait Digging


We knew that there was some historical significance for this new location in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, as evidenced by the mention of Crait in the visual guide for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and the subsequent announcement of a Marvel comic book.

But the shot of the Millennium Falcon being pursued by First Order TIE Fighters through caverns while red stalagmite protruding all around makes it pretty clear that this will be the case.

As the Falcon dives weaves through the cavern in hot pursuit, it appears as if mining equipment proliferates the area.

We're not sure what exactly is being mined on Crait and why it was valuable enough that it could help fund the Rebellion's war efforts against the Empire, we're likely to learn more about the resource it provides when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres in theaters.

New Creatures

Some people are calling them snow wolves or ice fox or something similar, but let's get something straight: Crait is not an ice planet! So snow wolf doesn't make sense!

Crystal coyote, however… now we're getting somewhere.

These new dog-like creatures appeared in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene from the new movie, during which it appears as if a pack of the animals are heading inside of a large hangar door as it's being closed.

Perhaps the crystal coyotes (if that name isn't canon, it should be) can sense the impending doom from invading First Order forces, and are looking to get away before it all goes to hellp.

It's nice that Star Wars: The Last Jedi is including a few different aliens and not just relying on the adorable and tasty Porgs.

Rey vs. Snoke

This one is a little scary, teasing some dire developments for Rey before the film's over.

The quick shot of Snoke with his arm stretched out toward the camera, beckoning for someone to fulfill their destiny, is quickly followed by a shot of Rey bent backwards and screaming in agony.

The scene appears to take place in Snoke's throne room, with the crimson red walls and his Praetorian Guard moments just out of focus. Spoke appears in the background, out of focus and nearly indistinguishable if not for his ornate golden robes.

Though Rey might finally get to confront the villain responsible for all of those attempted murder plots that went awful, it looks like there's a possibility she might not survive the encounter.

Misdirection

Star Wars trailers are notoriously secretive about specific plot details in the movies, and this one doesn't appear to be bucking that trend.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi's Trailer was edited so well that it made it seem like even disparate shots all go together.

One specific scene shows Rey tell someone that she needs help finding her place in the galaxy, and the trailer ends with Kylo Ren offering his own hand.

But if you look closely, that might just be some trickery done in the surroundings. Sure, the lighting in the two clips look very similar, but if you look closely you can see that Rey's set up is pretty basic with few effects.

And the scene with Kylo Ren shows the character standing amid ash and fire and embers floating around.

That's not to say Kylo and Rey won't share a similar movie in the film, just that these two particular scenes don't add up.
