Star Wars: Gwendoline Christie Talks Developing Phasma's Backstory For The Last Jedi

While Captain Phasma was first introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many fans felt that the character deserved way more development in the film. According to Gwendoline Christie, who brings Phasma to life in the sci-fi franchise, that added depth became a priority to her while filming the upcoming Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

"I'm hugely lucky to be classically trained with a method approach." Christie explained to IGN, "So I do all of my work about who, for me, that character is, so I can go into that situation and everything is justified in logic and fact, like it is for us as humans. Life governs the decision-making process that becomes who we are."

But for Christie, that development has been primarily independent from secondary Star Wars media - such as the comics and Phasma tie-in novel.

"I haven't been allowed entry to it." Phasma revealed. "I have been following [Phasma author] Delilah Dawson, who I'm following on Twitter just to say, 'Remember me? Do you think about me?'"

As Christie revealed, that character study sometimes turned into a collaboration between her and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson.

"Rian and I did have long conversations about this character and who she was." Christie revealed. "And I was utterly delighted in how willing he was to listen to my ideas and really thrilled to exchange them with him and hear his. He really is a master writer and director, and I think we've seen that in the films that he's made but I think that we truly will see that in the depths to which he goes in The Last Jedi."

Fans will have to wait and see how that added character development manifests itself when Star Wars: The Last Jedi premieres on December 15th.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is the second film in the new Star Wars sequel trilogy that began with Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015. The film will deal with Luke training Rey to become a, and possibly the last, Jedi. Meanwhile, the Resistance, including Poe Dameron and First Order defector Finn, continues to fight against the First Order, led by General Hux, while Supreme Leader Snoke and his Dark Side follower Kylo Ren continue their mysterious plot.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is written and directed by Rian Johnson and stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio Del Toro, Laura Dern, and Kelly Marie Tran.
