'Fear The Walking Dead' Had A 'Breaking Bad' Easter Egg

Fear the Walking Dead returned for the second half of its third season on Sunday night, complete with a tribute to AMC's popular retired series Breaking Bad.

In the second hour of Fear the Walking Dead's midseason 3 premiere on Sunday night, the AMC series saw Madison Clark venturing into a Bazar south of the American border. Upon arrival, the characters and audiences were treated to a certain song playing: "Negro y Azul: The Ballad of Heisenberg."

The song was used to unexpectedly open an episode in Breaking Bad's second season, complete with its own music video upon arrival, and earned itself some playback on Sunday night with showrunner Dave Erickson's confirmation.

"That's absolutely right," Erickson told THR. "I tried to be subtle with it. That was probably the moment when I fell the most deeply in love with Breaking Bad, when they did that cold open music video. As we were looking for pieces to incorporate into this world, it had the right vibe to it. It's a gentle nod of admiration and adoration to Vince Gilligan."

Breaking Bad aired from January of 2008 through September of 2013. For fans eager to argue the existence of Breaking Bad's song arriving after the world fell apart in The Walking Dead's 2010 launching point, the Negro y Azul episode of Breaking Bad aired in April of 2009.

This is not the first time The Walking Dead universe has connected itself to Breaking Bad in Easter egg form, either.

The Walking Dead's sibling series Fear the Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 pm ET on AMC. The Walking Dead will return for its eighth season on October 22, 2017.
