Is The Walking Dead About To Have A Major Time Jump?

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes actor Andrew Lincoln ws asked if his character would feel comfortable having another child with his girlfriend Michonne should circumstances permit. Shippers felt the ground shake when Lincoln ultimately dubbed repopulating the world as one of Rick's major goals but what concluded his statement is most interesting.

The current times on The Walking Dead are certainly not suitable for a child -- Lincoln knows that. It's what prompted him to conclude his response with a hint at another time jump on the AMC series.

"Also, maybe in a couple of episodes time, there may be a jump ahead in the curve and maybe setting themselves to that job at hand," Lincoln said.

Time jumps are nothing new on The Walking Dead. The series has used them to continue telling stories going from one season to another (probably in part due to Chandler Riggs' rapid growth) or from one episode to another (Season 6 Episodes 9 and 10 saw a considerable gap after the zombie herd in Alexandria was conquered). However, at this juncture, another time jump would probably be the largest the show has seen.

In Robert Kirkman's comics from Skybound/Image Comics, The Walking Dead sees a multi-year time jump following the war between Rick's groups and Negan's Saviors. After the final battle is fought and many of our survivor's fates are left in question, an issue picked up two years after its predecessor. When the new arc began, Michonne was missing. Alexandria was thriving. Negan was in prison.

Lincoln has also hinted that he believes TV Rick would be open to jailing Negan rather than killing him after some sort of arc but says right now, the only thing Rick wants is "to whoop his ass."

Given how accurately The Walking Dead TV series has followed the comic book series in recent months, a two-year time jump does not seem out of the question. That said, there is a lot of ground to cover before we get there.

The Walking Dead returns for the rest of its seventh season on February 12 at 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
