One The Walking Dead Crossover Is Officially Ruled Out

To anyone hoping Clementine, one of the major protagonists of Telltale's Walking Dead games, might show up elsewhere in the canon: better luck next time.

Since launching as a comic book in 2003, The Walking Dead has spawned a number of ancillary spinoffs and tie-ins. The largest and best known is the popular AMC TV series, but a close second is the Telltale Games series which has followed a little girl named Clementine since 2012.

But Clementine will never appear in any of the other Walking Dead titles -- comics, TV shows, or otherwise. During a panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2017, The Walking Dead's writer and creator Robert Kirkman was asked about a potential crossover or recreation of Clementine which would see her interact with Rick Grimes and company in live action or in video game form.

"No," Kirkman said, firmly. "I like that if you want to play The Walking Dead video game, you get Clementine, and you get a unique experience."

"I think that it makes The Walking Dead more special that the comic has an experience, and they're very linked," Kirkman explains. "It would be cool to see Clementine show up and high-five Carl, but you're just gonna have to write some fan-fiction, I'm sorry."

Characters from The Walking Dead's comic and TV universe have previously appeared in the Telltale Games series, such as Glenn Rhee and Paul "Jesus" Monroe, but those created for the video game will not be appearing in illustrated or live-action form.

In fact, crossovers are not something The Walking Dead's creator is eager to accomplish on any front. Not only has a one-shot comic been left unresolved after introducing Rick's brother Jeff to readers but the sibling series on AMC will likely never overlap, either.

"If Oklahoma ever went up in a nuclear cloud, you'd see it on The Walking Dead and on Fear the Walking Dead, you'd see it...I don't know the exact timeline," Kirkman said. "Fear the Walking Dead takes place roughly around the time of Season 1 and beginning of Season 2 in The Walking Dead. Walking Dead Season 8 is taking place with the theoretical Fear the Walking Dead Season 7. We gotta get there."
