The Walking Dead: What Did Michonne Find?

WARNING: Major Spoilers Ahead For The Walking Dead Season Seven!

As tonight's episode of The Walking Dead came to an end, many were left scratching their heads at Michonne's mysterious discovery.

What did she find on the road?

At first glance, the burning object looked like a pile of rubble. Perhaps a small building had come down, but the placement wouldn't make any sense.

When you take a second look, it's obvious what she sees. In front of Michonne, lay a pile of torched mattresses. All of the beds that were taken from Alexandria were dumped just down the road, and set on fire.

It's clear that the Saviors didn't need the beds, they just wanted to show Rick how truly in control they are.

Danai Gurira, who plays Michonne, took some time this week to speak with ComicBook.com's Brandon Davis about the events of this episode. During their exclusive interview, the actress had this to say regarding Michonne's feelings upon discovering the mattresses.

"I guess it's definitely the culmination of all that we've seen through the episode, which is the fact that she is very distressed about their situation and about the response that they'd had at the result of Rick's response. They've had a bit of an impasse, and there's an impasse between her and Rick in terms of how they would strategize how to handle a foe or an enemy or someone who is around them this way, and what she wants and how she wants to handle it versus how he wants to handle it. The culmination at the end is really about seeing there is no way these people are going to be able to be handled in her mind the way Rick has proposed, especially after what he shares with her. She wants to respect it, but it's not who they are and they can't tolerate these people. These people are trying to enslave them and to psychologically break them. That's what those mattresses represent. They didn't take those mattresses because they needed them. They took them to cripple us more and more, and to make us understand that we are their slaves."

You may wonder why this all bothers Michonne so much, and Gurira had an answer for that too. She knows that her character can't exist in this kind of world. Take a look:

"After all the pain and suffering and destruction they've already experienced at these people's hands, she cannot abide. It goes against the very saddle of her everything, of her very being. It's really a culmination of that frustration and that unwillingness, honestly, to be enslaved. That's literally what she's looking at. She's looking at their enslavement tactics and their own taunt of what they've already done to them, and their traps. It's like you're trapped literally also."
