The Walking Dead's Joshua Hoover Reveals Fat Joey's Backstory

WARNING: Spoilers Ahead For The Walking Dead Season 7!

If you were sad to see Fat Joey killed off of The Walking Dead during the midseason finale, you weren't alone. Although the character was one of the Saviors, he had garnered a positive report with fans around the country.

Everyone seemed to love Joey's innocent smile and boyish charm, it was just frustrating to know he was under Negan's thumb. As he said in the finale though, he was just trying to get by.

Actor Joshua Hoover, who played Fat Joey on the show, took some time to speak with ComicBook.com's Walking Dead Insider Brandon Davis about his character.

After talking about his death scene, and what could come next, Hoover opened up about Fat Joey's backstory, and what led him to Negan.

First Brandon asked Hoover if he had an idea of what Joey was like before Negan, even if it was just something the actor had come up with on his own.

"I think he was smart," the actor said. "He was trusted with more of the tech type stuff. I love that cause I'm drawn to tech, computers, cameras, all of that kind of stuff. I love all of that realm of world. I think he did whatever he needed to do to live comfortably, and I think Negan was the best option of that. I think that was kind of an Easy Street."

Hoover was of course referring to the song Easy Street, which was played over and over again during Daryl's torture scenes. After talking a little bit about Negan and Joey's interaction, the actor went on to describe the information he was given about Joey during his audition. If the scenes he had to read were any indication, Joey did have a lot of heart.

"I was supposed to have heart, you know what I mean? The original sides were me, I was a border patrol guy and I was about to shoot a kid. I was about to shoot a kid that was sneaking over the border, and my army pal or whoever I was with was like, 'Hey man, take him out.' I was like, 'Come on man, that's a kid.' That's basically where fat joey came from I guess, I think that they built the character with some heart."

It's nice to know that Fat Joey was more than just a goon for Negan, but it would have been even better to see his character played out. It's a shame he had to go, but it goes a long way in serving Daryl's character in the future.
