BBC Axes 'Doctor Who' Spinoff 'Class'

It looks like the Doctor Who spinoff Class won't be returning for another season.

After weeks of speculation, BBC Three controller Damian Kavanagh confirmed the series' cancellation while at a Broadcasting Press Guild event.

"No, [we're not bringing it back]." Kavanagh revealed. "There was nothing wrong with it – I thought [showrunner Patrick Ness] did a great job, he explored an amazing world."

Class followed a group of students who protect frequent Who location Coal Hill Academy from alien threats. The series had quite a few Who influences, with outgoing Who showrunner Steven Moffat serving as an executive producer, and Twelfth Doctor Peter Capaldi cameoing early on in the series.

While Class developed a following both in the UK and America, Kavanagh revealed that the series just didn't work for his network.

"In honesty, it just didn't really land for us on BBC Three." Kavanagh explained. "Things sometimes don't, and I've got to make decisions about what we're going to do from a drama point of view. There's always times when you do something and you have to decide that it's not going to come back. Class is just one of those things."

In recent months, the creative team behind Class seemed pretty divided on its potential future. Ness announced back in June that he had a "faint hope" for a second season, while series star Greg Austin felt there were more stories to tell.

"There's a long way for these characters to go." Austin told Digital Spy back in October. "By the end of the series, there's some big choices that have to be made... that leave a lot of room for a lot of big consequences. That's all I'm going to say!"

Class is just the latest Who spinoff to meet an untimely end, following Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Chronicles.

The Doctor Who Christmas Special airs on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2017.
