Judge Dredd Will Be Futuristic 'Dark Fantasy'

Ignore the timeline that puts Judge Dredd: Mega-City One two years away from enjoyment, and focus on the fact that it will be a futuristic, dark fantasy.

Executive Producer and Rebellion CEO Jason Kingsley told SFX Magazine that the soon-to-be produced episodical will be something unlike either of the film adaptations and focus more on storytelling, and specifically the darker side of the fantasy spectrum.

"Dark fantasy elements are one area that would be great to explore," he said. "The show will combine the macabre with the insane and the light-hearted.

"It's a big place, after all, with 400 million stories to tell … Long-form storytelling makes showing Mega-City One and its inhabitants much easier. Trying to fit all of that into a two-hour movie is very hard."

Kingsely was quick to add in that fans should not expect this version any time soon, "My best guess is that it is at least two years away."

To date there is no casting news -- fingers crossed for Karl Urban to reprise the role -- and no locations of shooting schedule. So the best guess is that the news could be coming soon, with news beginning to come out for the future plans, and odds are that it will be shot in the UK with its ties to game developer, Rebellion.

In 1995, Sylvester Stallone starred in an adaptation of the character that leaned into the goofy, campy elements of the character, and considering how few members of the movie-going audience were familiar with the character, the film ultimately ended up a flop.

It was rebooted in 2012 with Dredd 3D, which starred Urban (Star Trek) and Lena Heady (Game of Thrones). That film gave audiences a much more authentic look at the character, leaning heavily into the violent sci-fi elements made popular in the original comics.

Sadly, despite how much fans connected with the Urban-starring film, it still didn't earn enough at the box office to gain a sequel, even with fans regularly campaigning to get the creative team to revive the character.

It was announced in early May that the show would be coming, and with the initial release fans were given the following description:

Judge Dredd: Mega City One is set in a future where the entire East Coast of the United States has become one crowded metropolis. The show will feature an ensemble of Judges - future cops who are endowed with the power of a traditional judge, jury, and executioner - as they attempt to curb crime in the 22nd century.
