Riverdale EP Teases Archie And Betty's Future In Season 2

The first season finale of Riverdale packed in some shocking events that are sure to rattle the small town heading into Season 2, but some fans might still be reeling from some of the quieter moments in the last episode of the year.

Though neighbors Betty and Archie began the season with unresolved feelings between the two, they have since ended up in new relationships with each other's BFFs Jughead and Veronica respectively. And though they're both committed to their partners, Archie was shown in one scene as if he was pining for his childhood friend Betty as she kissed Jughead.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa spoke to EW about that moment and revealed that there more to what we saw on the screen.

"There is always going to be some primal connection between Archie and Betty," Aguirre-Sacasa said. "They grew up together, they live across the street from each other, they were always the person they most confided in. Even if Betty had deeper feelings for Archie and Archie didn't, she still was his best friend and he still shared everything with her."

But the Riverdale executive producer also revealed that bittersweet moment could lead to bigger things in the future.

"Part of what's going on in that scene is Archie is realizing that he's been replaced by Jughead," he said. "That's a confusing thing for Archie to sort through. Does he regret what he said in the pilot? Who knows? Do I believe what he says to Veronica? 100 percent, I do. But feelings are messy and not cut and dry. These kids have been under an enormous amount of stress, so things get jumbled up."

Considering how the source material always played with the Veronica/Archie/Betty love triangle, we can't see the series continuing without at least flirting with the idea of Archie and Betty as a couple. And considering Riverdale is a teen drama on The CW, it's more than likely an inevitability.

Riverdale will begin shooting Season 2 in June, so hopefully we get word of a premiere date before the summer ends. Check out the synopsis for the Season Finale below, called "Chapter Thirteen: The Sweet Hereafter."

Archie (KJ Apa) and Veronica (Camila Mendes) continue to grow closer. Betty (Lili Reinhart) is tired of her family acting as if nothing has happened and confronts her mother. Jughead (Cole Sprouse) finds himself in an unexpected situation, leaving Archie and the gang scrambling. Hermione (Marisol Nichols) makes Fred (Luke Perry) an offer that seems too good to be true. Meanwhile, the truth about Blossom's family business is revealed leaving Cheryl (Madelain Petsch) to take matters into her own hands. Madchen Amick and Ashleigh Murray also star.

Lee Toland Krieger directed the episode written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.

Riverdale stars KJ Apa as Archie, Cole Sprouse as Jughead, Lili Reinhart as Betty Cooper, Camilla Mendes as Veronica Lodge, and Luke Perry as Archie's father Fred Andrews, among others. The series' showrunner is Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Archie Entertainment's Chief Creative Officer and the writer of Afterlife With Archie, the publisher's wildly popular zombie series.
