Star Trek: Discovery Showrunner Teases Easter Eggs

If there is one thing Star Trek does well, it is easter eggs. The beloved sci-fi franchise has been around for decades, and it has racked up an impressive lineup of tv shows, films, video games, and more. With so much content at its disposal, new Star Trek projects have been able to house insider jokes and references which diehard Trekkies love. So, really, it should be a surprise to hear that Star Trek: Discovery plans to continue the tradition.

Alex Kurtzman is the man overseeing Star Trek's newest series as executive producer, and the man recently chatted with Collider about the project. While the showrunner could not reveal any specific details, Kurtzman did tease fans about the series' love of easter eggs. When the producer was asked point-blank on whether fans should expect plenty of easter eggs, here's what Kurtzman had to say: "Not … There might be. There might be. We're still building some of those."

At the time of Colldier's interview, Star Trek: Discovery was filming its fifth episode. Kurtzman said scripts are in place for future episodes as well as directors. Fans can expect more updates on the Star Trek season's debut directors as the series nears its premiere date.

During a previous interview, Kurtzman also told fans that Star Trek: Discovery will house plenty of cameos. "So many actors are fans," he explained. "We literally got a list of them that were like, 'Here are people who said they want to be on Star Trek'. It was awesome… To just be in an episode or come in or out."

There is no word yet on whether any Star Trek veterans will sign onto the new show, but fans remain cautiously optimistic on that front. In the past, William Shatner said he would be willing to walk onto the show if he were "useful" - but such a cameo would certainly bend Star Trek: Discovery's timeline. The show is set to take place five years before the USS Enterprise embarks on its long-term voyage. Still, it's not like the franchise hasn't dabbled with timeline alterations before. When it comes to Star Trek, parallel universes and time-jumps are all part of the norm.

Star Trek: Discovery was created by Bryan Fuller and Alex Kurtzman. Fuller was originally intended to be Discovery's showrunner but was forced step down due to commitments to Starz' adaptation of Neil Gaiman's American Gods. Gretchen J. Berg and Aaron Harberts have taken over as showrunners. Its cast includes Jason Isaacs as Captain Lorca, Rainn Wilson as Star Trek: The Original Series character Harry Mudd, James Frain as Sarek, Spock's father, and Michelle Yeoh as Captain Georgiou, the captain of another Starfleet ship, the Shenzhou, which will be important to the plot of Star Trek: Discovery. Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp both play science officers. Mary Wiseman will play a final year Starfleet Academy cadet.

Star Trek: Discovery takes place roughly a decade prior to the five-year mission of Star Trek: The Original Series. In breaking with franchise tradition, the show's main protagonist will not be a captain. Instead, it will be First Officer Michael Burnham played by The Walking Dead alum Sonequa Martin-Green.
