The Wheel Of Time TV Series Moving Forward At Sony Television

Sony Pictures Television is moving forward with plans to adapt Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time series of fantasy novels to television.

The Wheel of Time consists of 14 novels beginning with The Eye of the World, which was published in 1990. The final three novels in the series – The Gathering Storm, Towers of Midnight, and A Memory of Light – were completed by fellow fantasy author Brandon Sanderson and published posthumously following Jordan's death in 2007.

The Wheel of Time is classic high fantasy, following a "chosen one," the Dragon Reborn, who is destined to unite the various factions of his world against his mortal enemy, the Dark One. The world and mythology of The Wheel of Time mixes Asian influences with the more traditional European ones that usually define the genre. The Wheel of Time is also noted for its length. Of the 14 novels in the series, the shortest of them – The Dragon Reborn and Winter's Heart – are over 500 pages long.

The final seven novels in The Wheel of Time series each hit number one on the New York Times Best Seller list. Once the series was completed, it was nominated in its entirety for a Hugo Award. The series has spawned a video game and a tabletop roleplaying game and even has its own soundtrack. The Eye of the World and the prequel novel New Spring have both been adapted into comic books.

Sony is producing the series alongside Red Eagle Entertainment and Radar Pictures. Rafe Judkins will write and executive produce. Judkin's resume includes work on Marvel's Agents of SHIELD for ABC, Chuck for NBC, and Hemlock Grove for Netflix.

Red Eagle's Rick Selvage and Larry Mondragon will also executive produce, as will Radar's Ted Field and Mike Weber, and Darren Lemke. Jordan's widow, Harriet McDougal, will serve as consulting producer.

An adaptation of The Wheel of Time has been in the works since 2000, though most have ever officially made it out to the public. There was a stir in February 2015, when FXX aired a completely unannounced and unpublicized pilot titled "Winter Dragon," starring Max Ryan and Billy Zane, at 1:30 a.m. McDougal said in a statement that she had no prior knowledge that the pilot was being produced and legal action followed. In April 2016, McDougal announced that legal issues had been resolved and that The Wheel of Time television adaptation would be moving forward.
