'Star Trek: Discovery' Nominated for Several Industry Awards

The television and film industry has nominated Star Trek: Discovery for several awards for the show’s inaugural season.

The first nomination came in for costume designer Gersha Phillips. The Costume Designers Guild nominated Phillips for the Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Television category.

Phillips had the daunting responsibility of designing not one but two new versions of the Starfleet uniform. The first was a new United Federation of Planets Starfleet uniform that fit into Star Trek: Discovery’s high-budget, modern visual style. The second was an equally appropriate uniform for the Terran Empire Starfleet of the mirror universe, where the crew has found itself in the second half of the season.

Star Trek: Discovery is up against Game of Thrones, Once Upon a Time, Sleepy Hollow, and the Star Trek-themed episode of Black Mirror, “USS Callister.”

Star Trek: Discovery star Wilson Cruz helped announce the nominees for this year’s GLAAD Media Awards, which honors media for the fair and inclusive treatment of the LGBTQ community. He was pleased to announce that Discovery was nominated for Outstanding TV Drama.

“I’m so THRILLED and grateful for @startrekcbs’ @glaad nomination for OUTSTANDING TV DRAMA!,” Cruz tweeted. “Thank you @glaad!”

Jason Isaacs was named one of the Best Actors in a TV Series for his protrayal of Captain Gabriel Lorca by Empire Magazine as part of the magazine’s annual Empire Awards.

Star Trek: Discovery also picked up multiple nominations from the Visual Effects Society. The show’s first episode, “The Vulcan Hello,” is nominated for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Episode and Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Episode.

CBS Television Studios publicist Kristen Hall, who heads yup public relations for Star Trek: Discovery, was nominated for the Maxwell Weinberg Publicist Showmanship Television Award by the International Cinematographers Guild. Star Trek: Discovery co-showrunner Aaron Harbets congratulated Hall on Twitter.

“Kristen Hall aka @KristenJane is the unsung hero of @startrekcbs,” Harberts tweeted. “Without her, the fans would know literally nothing about the show. She handles our interviews, takes care of us, and kills herself every day for #StarTrekDiscovery. This nom is so deserved.”

New Star Trek: Discovery episodes become available to stream Sundays at 8:30 p.m. ET on CBS All Access.
