Aquaman Director Teases Fans Over Film's New Release Date

Some DC Cinematic Universe fans were met with disappointment earlier today, upon learning that the upcoming Aquaman solo film will be delayed yet again. Instead of a projected release date in October 2018, the film will now premiere on December 21st, 2018.

One person who is turning lemons into lemonade, however, is the film's director, James Wan. Wan took to Twitter earlier today to make light of the situation, even spinning the new release date as a sort of gift to fans.

The 40 year-old director's interpretation of Aquaman has been highly anticipated for quite some time now, particularly among those who are fans of Wan's work in the horror genre. Wan has regularly used Twitter to address Aquaman-related drama, especially after rumors last year that he was leaving the project.

It's unclear exactly what motivated Warner Bros. to push the release date back, especially considering the progress Wan has seemed to make on the film in recent weeks. While the film is not set to begin filming until May 22nd, the first table read has already occurred between the film's star-studded cast, and Wan recently shared some tropical locations he has been scouting for the project.

But given Wan's newest response to the film's naysayers, it's safe to say that he's taking this recent studio setback in stride.

Aquaman will center on Aquaman as a reluctant ruler of the underwater kingdom of Atlantis who is caught between land dwellers that are always polluting the globe and his own people who are ready to invade the surface. Jason Momoa will play Aquaman. Also starring is Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, Amber Heard as Mera, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Patrick Wilson as Orm/Ocean Master, Temuera Morrison as Thomas Curry, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Black Manta.

James Wan will direct Aquaman from a screenplay written by Will Beall, based on a treatment by Wan and DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns. Albert Cho is 1st AD. Producers are Jon Berg, Geoff Johns, Peter Safran, Deborah Snyder, and Zack Snyder. Rob Cowan will serve as executive producer.
