Buffy The Vampire Slayer Season 11 Issue #1 Review - A Slayer's Life Never Changes

People grow, evolve, and adapt to the world around them, many times in unplanned ways. That isn't necessarily the case for a Slayer, but then again they aren't supposed to live very long, so anything further than 10 years deserves some measure of celebration. Buffy just didn't expect that celebration to come with a city-wide flood and an uninvited guest.

Spoilers from here on out, so if you haven't read the issue you've been warned.

Buffy fans have come to adore the vampire slayer for a multitude of reasons, one being her indomitable spirit. She strives to protect those she loves at all costs, and that loyalty has earned her a wide and unique group of allies that would do just about anything for her.

When season 11 begins, Buffy is actually in a very good place. Her off and on relationship with Spike seems to be on an upward swing, while her skills as a Slayer are as honed and refined as they've ever been. Willow is leading a coven of her own, and seems incredibly comfortable in her new leadership role, while Dawn and Xander have experienced a renaissance of their own. Even Giles, who underwent the unfortunate process of being reincarnated into a 13-year-old, seems to be finding some degree of normalcy.

The Buffy universe has always been at its best its characters, their motivations, and their relationships with one another are at the forefront. Season 11 seems to be toying with the idea of what one does when their family and friends move on without them. Her friends are all moving into new phases of their lives, while Buffy's destiny has never once changed or wavered, save for the acquisition of a slick new ax every so often.

The book contains the wonderful Buffy charm and humor throughout, and whether you've been on board from the beginning or this is your first Buffy comic in some time, you'll feel right at home with these wonderful characters. The art fits the tone and energy of this book perfectly and effectively delivers on the action when the crew has to take on a giant storm Dragon, which looks as cool as it sounds. Christos Gage also manages to introduce a new threat to the mix that plants the hook effectively for the coming issues.

Season 11 kicks off with a healthy mix of rich characters, witty humor, and stellar action, and the stage is now set for an entertaining season.
