Legendary comics editor and Vertigo Comics pioneer is returning to editing her own imprint more than three years after stepping away from the line she helped establish.

Though Berger has spent the last year as a freelance editor on the title Surgeon X from Image Comics, now she's partnering with Dark Horse Comics on a new lineup.

Berger Books was announced at the ComicsPRO retailer event by Berger herself while accepting the Industry Appreciation Award. The news has since been met with statements from Dark Horse President Mike Richardson, calling her a "visionary figure" in the world of comics.

Berger spoke with the Hollywood Reporter about the news.

"Dark Horse has been a pioneering and innovative independent publisher for 30 years, said Berger. "I'm very excited to join forces with them to produce this new line of creator-owned comics by a great group of diverse, distinctive and spectacular storytellers."

The editor established the Vertigo line as a premier destination for mature books with thoughtful, nuanced material. She oversaw editing on titles like Preacher, Transmetropolitan, and Sandman.

"Her storytelling instincts and her ability to champion and discover new creators has shaped the very best parts of the modern comic book industry," Richardson said. "And now her passion for comics and the major creators she is working with on Berger Books will have the industry talking for years to come."

The new batch of Berger Books will also see larger distribution to bookstores as a part of a deal with Penguin Random House.

No new titles were announced with the news, but Dark Horse has promised new information coming soon.
