Mad Max: Fury Road Earns $16.6 Million On Opening Day

It looks like Mad Max: Fury Road will eat the competition's dust this weekend.
Despite rave reviews, the Mad Max sequel only revved up $16.6 million for its opening day box office totals. It's main competitor, Pitch Perfect 2, however, sped ahead with almost $28 million on May 15. Projections estimate that Fury Road will finish second for the entire weekend with $41—$43 million total. Pitch Perfect 2 is expected to continue its lead with $62—$64 million before the weekend ends.
With a budget surpassing $200 million, George Miller's Mad Max sequel looks like it will at least regain its money through the international box-office. As Deadline notes, Fury Road should end the weekend with $200 million worldwide, if it hits its projections.
Mad Max: Fury Road is now in theaters.
