After Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation scored $682M at the worldwide box office -- just shy of Ghost Protocol's $694M franchise record -- you knew Paramount and Skydance would move quickly on a sixth Mission: Impossible film.
According to Variety, they would like to bring back Rogue Nation's screenwriter-director, Christopher McQuarrie, to write and possibly direct Mission: Impossible 6. "Several sources with knowledge of the situation say talks are progressing towards a deal being closed," they report, "with one insider saying that the studio plans to get production up and running by next August."
Tom Cruise will be back to reprise his Ethan Hunt role and the studio is "also holding an option for Rebecca Ferguson to reprise her Rogue Nation role of Ilsa Faust."
If McQuarrie were to direct Mission: Impossible 6, he would become the first director to helm more than one film in the series.
Mission: Impossible 6 could begin filming by next summer.
