Square Enix Shows Off Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Gameplay Demo

Square Enix's storied series Deus Ex is returning this year with Mankind Divided, and the developers have given fans a glimpse at how the game and protagonist Adam Jensen's world has changed since we last saw them.

The new gameplay demo takes place 30 hours after a train station was bombed by terrorists, which has left the city in a state of chaos while also causing issues with Jensen's augments. A pit stop at his friendly neighborhood augmentation specialist Vaclav Koller turns into a rescue operation when the local mafia tries to get to him first.

During the demo we see just how segmented society has become since the last game, with the government being very distrustful and cautious of augmented individuals like Jensen. Even though Jensen has high clearance, he is still subjected to certain aspects of life that normal citizens aren't.

Society isn't the only change players will notice in Mankind Divided. The developers have strived to implement verticality into the environment, giving players more avenues of approach. They've also added more tactical elements to the game and refined the stealth experience with takedowns from cover and more weapon options that seek to make the stealth route a legitimate option as opposed to just running in guns blazing.

They show off the Tesla gun arm in action, which once leveled up can take out up to four enemies at once. If you prefer a more traditional firearm version, Jensen will also have access to a stun gun that replicates the effect, but can only hit one enemy and only at very close range.

The world Jensen inhabits sounds incredibly interesting, and if they can follow through on these gameplay improvements and make the storyline worthwhile, Mankind Divided could be quite good. You can check out some additional screenshots in the gallery.

The game releases on August 23rd for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
