The Black Ranger Gets An Upgrade In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers recently introduced a villainous new Ranger into the mix, and the world he inhabits is a very different place than the Rangers are used to.

In issue #9 Tommy and Billy ended up in the dark dimension that he resides in, a dimension that saw the Power Rangers defeated by this new Ranger and Rita Repulsa. In #11 the two Rangers happen upon someone with a familiar costume, but like everything else in this world's it's not what they expect.

Writer Kyle Higgins and artist Hendry Prasetya introduce the Mastodon Sentries, soldiers that serve the evil Ranger. As their name suggests, they take visual cues from the Black Ranger, and Higgins recently spoke to IGN about their creation.

"This is a different world—a darker world. In this place, the Power Coins have been used by our dark Ranger to build up an army. So, a militaristic aesthetic, mixed with classic Power Rangers iconography—like Zack's battle axe—is what we landed on. I have to give massive, massive props to Hendry—he did a ridiculous job on the design."

When asked how Zack will react to the news that his uniform is being used for an evil army Higgins said "Well, there's nothing like seeing the mantle you've proudly worn get warped and corrupted for evil, right? Stay tuned!"

The comics are rapidly expanding and adding to Power Rangers lore, and soon filmgoers will also get a chance to see the Rangers in action on the big screen. You can view the official description for the Power Rangers live action reboot below.

"Saban's Power Rangers follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove - and the world - is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it's too late, band together as the Power Rangers."

Power Rangers stars Bryan Cranston (Zordon), Elizabeth Banks (Rita Repulsa), Naomi Scott (Kimberly/Pink Ranger), David Denman (Sam Scott), Becky G. (Trini/Yellow Ranger), Sarah Grey (Amanda), RJ Cyler (Billy Cranston/Blue Ranger), Emily Maddison (Rebecca), Ludi Lin (Zack Taylor/Black Ranger), and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger).

Power Rangers is set to land in theaters on March 24, 2017. Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #11 hits stores on January 18, 2017.
