Dragon Ball Super: Why Aren't Trunks & Goten On The Universe 7 Team?

In the coming weeks, fans of Dragon Ball are going to watch as Universe 7 is forced into its most dire battle to date. The 'Universal Survival' arc kicked off back in February simply enough when Goku asked the Omni-Kings to hold a multiverse martial arts tournament. However, the childish duo have since raised the event's stakes to an insane level since the losing teams will have their homes erased by the all-powerful deities. With so much at stake, Goku is back on Earth trying to assemble a crack team capable of winning against some of the multiverse's best fighters.

However, if you're hoping Goten and Trunks will take part, then think again. The two half-Saiyans will not be added to Universe 7's team. Before the new arc began, visuals for the saga let fans know the younger fighters would not be recruited by Goku, and many questioned the decision. When it comes down to it, Goten an Trunks are very strong warriors who have fought the likes of Super Buu. Goku isn't too impressed by those credentials though.

If you want to know why Goten and Trunks were kept off the elite team, then you should know the reasoning comes down to strategy. Goku may love to fight head-on, but the Saiyan does know a good bit about battle. In episode 83 of Dragon Ball Super, Goku explains his reasoning for keeping Goten and Trunks off the team. The hero doesn't think the pair are suited for this tournament despite their power. Goku finds them to be too straightforward, and they lack experience when compared to other fighters. In his opinion, the boys will get eliminated from the tournament fast by being pushed outside of the event's ring.

For the upcoming tournament, the event will work different from past martial arts get-togethers. Instead of featuring individual matches, the Omni-Kings want the Tournament of Power to have a battle royal style. All of the opponents will fight in one massive match, and the universe that has the most fighters left standing when time ends if the winner. If Goten and Trunks are busy showing off, the pair will expose themselves to a ring-out scenario, and Goku does not want to risk that happening.

To be fair, Goku does have right to worry about Goten and Trunks fighting. The younger fighters do have excellent chemistry, but their combined interest in one-upping each other can lead to disaster. And, if the pair were able to fuse in the tournament, then fans would no doubt see a repeat of Gotenks battles against Buu. The duo were able to initially pummel the alien thanks to their immense power level, but Gotenks' need to boast eventually got them absorbed.

Yikes.

Dragon Ball Super's "Universal Survival" saga is part of the recent simulcast agreement that sites like Crunchyroll and Funimation have scored. Dragon Ball Super airs on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami will begin airing the English dub on Adult Swim Saturdays at 11:30 p.m.
