DreamWorks Pictures has released the final trailer for its live-action film adaptation of Ghost in the Shell.

The live action Ghost in the Shell is inspired by the 1995 anime classic that was a major force in bringing Japanse animation to North America. The way Ghost in the Shell combines a cyberpunk aesthetic with heavy, existential philosophy has proved seminal across pop culture and can be seen in films like The Matrix and video games like Deus Ex.

Ghost in the Shell was originally a manga by Masamune Shirow. The franchise has been adapted into multiple anime movies, anime television series, and video games. Shirow has also created a sequel manga and a anime movie sequel, Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, was released in 2004.

The Ghost in the Shell live action film seems to blend elements of the original Ghost in the Shell anime movie with portions of the popular television anime Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex.

To celebrate the release of the live-action Ghost in the Shell, the original anime film briefly returned to theaters and was re-released on Blu-ray with a steelbook cover designed by Mondo.

Steven Spielberg acquired the rights to create a live-action Ghost in the Shell movie in 2008. Margot Robbie was offered the role of the Major, but turned it down to play Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad instead. The role ultimately went to Scarlett Johansson. Principal photography on Ghost in the Shell began in February 2016. Production was completed in June 2016.
