Eiichiro Oda Always Meant For 'One Piece' To Look Weird

One Piece's distinct art style might occasionally raise some eyebrows, but that's apparently all part of its creators' plans.
In a recent magazine blurb, Eiichiro Oda addressed the series' unique - and often jarring - character design. As he explained, the goal was to make something that stood out from the traditional conventions of the anime/manga world.
"20 years ago, when I was just getting started as a manga creator, people would always say 'Your art is really unusual.'" Oda revealed. "Even when One Piece began serialization, people kept saying things like 'I hate the art' or 'Your art is weird, but the series is interesting.' And I totally get what they're saying, because I did everything I could to make something different from the manga other people were making."
Judging by the fan response to One Piece over the years, it's safe to say that that approach has paid off. The series recently celebrated its twentieth anniversary with a special television special, which was simulcast in the US and Canada through Funimation.
But even with that long of a legacy, it's uncertain exactly how long new installments of One Piece will be released. Oda's desire to end the series has previously been hinted at, as well as what that conclusion would be.
But don't worry, One Piece's legacy would still live on, with a live-action Hollywood television series currently in development. While that news might not please every fan, Oda has appeared to be on board with the idea, even suggesting his ideal casting for the live-action interpretation.
