Gotham: Lazarus Pit Saves [SPOILER]'s Life

Major spoilers for the season finale of Gotham follows.

While still under the spell the Shaman, Bruce was convinced to kill the man that has been raising him — Alfred Pennyworth.

In a move that shocked Gotham viewers, Bruce plunged a sword straight through the chest of Alfred, effectively killing within seconds.

Fortunately enough for us — and Mr. Pennyworth — Bruce had met Ra's al Ghul just before and was introduced to a Lazarus Pit. Once Bruce broke the Shaman's spell, he was able to use water from the Lazarus Pit on Alfred, healing his sword wound and breathing life back into the butler.

For those not familiar with Lazarus Pits and the lore behind their restorative properties, they're bodies of water that are able to bring people back to life. Throughout the comics, they're largely based in Batman titles.

If you're a fan of any of The CW's Arrowverse shows, you may have recalled the use of Lazarus pits on Arrow. With both Thea Queen (Willa Holland) and Sara Lance (Caity Lotz) both mortally wounded at different points throughout the series, each of the characters were brought back from the dead.

In all versions of the Pits, people brought back from the dead typically go through a brief period of insanity, which might be a hint as to how Alfred will be acting as soon as the fourth season picks up this Fall.
