Batman's loyal aide Alfred has been called upon to do many things, and typically he does them with no hesitation.

In Batman#5 however, Alfred does find himself in an unexpected situation, and his dialogue indicates that he doesn't necessarily know if he'll make it out alive. In I Am Gotham part five, the young hero Gotham has been manipulated by Psycho Pirate, at the behest of Hugo Strange.

As a result, the superpowered hero is unwillingly attacking the city, and with Batman still too far away to help, he calls on Alfred to do what he can. Alfred then dons the costume, all the while delivering a monologue to Thomas Wayne about how he's carried out his guardian duties so far.

While Alfred might not be able to put up much of a fight in a melee battle, he doesn't have to. Batman has a wealth of technology at his disposal, but that isn't Alfred's style. Alfred would rather take it old school, and if Batman has taught us anything, it's that hitting someone head on at 196 MPH will get the job done.

That's also probably the last time Bruce lets Alfred drive the Batmobile, and I don't blame him.

Batman is written by Tom King with art from David Finch. To read the whole story make sure to pick up Batman #5, which is in comic shops today.
