Alicia Silverstone Clueless About Why Wonder Woman Is So Successful

Alicia Silverstone has recently revealed she would love another shot at Batgirl, but she's been a bit down on the overall reaction to Wonder Woman.
Not on the movie itself though, but more on the reaction to it being the first female-led superhero movie. The topic came up in an interview with Variety (via The Wrap), and she doesn't seem to think the premise is so special.
"Before 'Wonder Woman' … 'Wonder Woman?' Before 'Wonder Woman' there have been many movies with female leads, so I get a little confused," Silverstone said. "We have made strides, of course. I think about, what about all those wonderful comedians who are females who have had massive hits? There's 'Bridesmaids.'"
Silverstone also mentioned her own starring vehicle, saying "I don't know. I just feel like, over the years, there was 'Mean Girls,' there was 'Clueless,' over time we have had so many movies that have been female-driven."
Silverstone seems to take issue with people calling it the first female-led box office success, but most aren't doing that. Instead, they're referring to the superhero genre, which has largely been dominated by men and male directors. Obviously, it isn't the first female-driven success overall, but there's no denying the step forward Wonder Woman signifies.
While she's glad it did well, she isn't necessarily a fan of the type of movie Wonder Woman fits into, that being the realm of action blockbusters.
"It has to be 'Wonder Woman.' It has to have tons of flash, right?" she said. "Like when you're looking at children's films now, as a mom, I don't want my kid to see all that. Loud effects, all the stuff that's like stimulate, stimulate! But that's what audiences want, so it's a tricky thing. Sometimes it's just the quieter more interesting things sometimes get seen because they touch someone enough. We have made strides, of course… It's like a few steps forward and back."
It's easy to spot the step forward, but not so sure about the step back.

Wonder Woman is in theaters now, followed by Justice League on November 17, 2017; Aquaman on July 27, 2018; Shazam on April 5, 2019; Justice League 2 on June 14, 2019; Cyborg on April 3, 2020; and Green Lantern Corps on July 24, 2020. The Flash, The Batman, Dark Universe and Man of Steel 2 are currently without a release dates.
