Arrow EP Teases Show's Very Different Season 5 Finale

03/19/2017 11:59 pm EDT

The running joke with viewers of Arrow is that the season always wraps with Oliver Queen and his team trying — though not alwasy successful — to prevent a terrorist attack of some sort on Star City.

In the first season finale, Malcolm Merlyn wanted to level the Glades. Lance and Felicity were able to stop one his bombs from exploding, but one that they weren't aware of went off, causing buildings in the city to crumble and inadvertently the death of Tommy Merlyn. In the second season finale, Amanda Waller nearly leveled Star City with ARGUS drones in order to prevent Slade Wilson and his men from leaving. For the third season finale, Ra's al Ghul planned to unleash a virus that would kill the citizens of Star City. And in last season's finale, Damien Darhk nearly nuked Star City to kingdom come.

Knowing that that formula has become stale, showrunner Wendy Mericle promises to mix it up for Season 5's finale. "I'll just say this: Star City is not in jeopardy," she told Rotten Tomatoes at Palyefest 2017 this weekend. "As we've joked before, there's always a terrorist attack on Star City in May. Not this time. Prometheus is a very personal villain, very psychological villain and the ending will be appropriate to that."

Prometheus (Josh Segarra) goes to great lengths to break Oliver (Stephen Amell). Meanwhile, in the flashbacks, Anatoly (guest star David Nykl) becomes worried about Oliver's increasingly violent tendencies, which come to a head in a brutal confrontation.

Kevin Tancharoen directed the episode written by Brian Ford Sullivan & Emilio Ortega Aldrich.

Based on the characters from DC, ARROW is from Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros. Television, with executive producers Greg Berlanti (The Flash, Supergirl), Marc Guggenheim (Eli Stone, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters), Andrew Kreisberg (The Flash, Supergirl), Wendy Mericle (Desperate Housewives, Eli Stone) and Sarah Schechter (Supergirl, Blindspot).
