The Batman: Why Matt Reeves Is A Great Director Pick

The DC Extended Universe Batman solo movie has been on a roller coaster ride through development, but as of today (at the time of writing this), it seems the roller coaster could be slowing down.

The Batman has found a director in Matt Reeves, who previously stepped into replace Ben Affleck in the director's chair - only to drop out of job. Now Reeves is back and locked in as both director and producer of The Batman, and a lot of fans are happy about it - with good reason.

Here's Why Matt Reeves is a great director for The Batman.

Beauty of the Dark Side

Matt Reeves has really earned his directorial marks for making lavishly dark genre films (Cloverfield, Let Me In, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes), which each have mystery/thriller elements, grounded in personal drama.

That's pretty much the resume you want for the director of a Batman movie.

He Has the Action Chops

Reeves was directing good thrillers right from the start, but it wasn't until Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014 that we really got to see his abilities as an action director on impressive display. He's now set to release his biggest blockbuster film ever this year (the epic-looking War for the Planet of the Apes); the action glimpsed in that film's ominous first trailer looks like it's definitely on a new level for the director - with Andy Serkis' Caesar even showing off a few Batman-style takedown skill.

Simply put: Matt Reeves seems to be in a prime place, career-wise, to offer fans a Batman movie that's more viscerally-thrilling and action packed than any of the other prospective directors (even Affleck) would've delivered.

He's More Than a Director

The bonus you get with Matt Reeves is that he's not just a director - he's a true, all-around creative visionary filmmaker. He's been a screenwriter (including on his own films), and will both produce and direct The Batman.

Point is: with Reeves there's greater chance of having an able and highly competent creative hand guiding things, rather than too many cooks in the kitchen. It's an approach that led Nolan's Dark Knight Trilogy to greatness, and what fans kind of expected to get from Ben Affleck starring/directing/writing/producing The Batman.
