Batman V Superman Hits $209 Million, Projected For Huge Second Weekend

04/01/2016 11:05 am EDT

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice grossed $209.07 million in its first week at the box office. That's the 11th highest grossing first week ever, behind Iron Man 3's $212.4 million.

On Thursday, Batman v Superman earned $7.7 million, down 4 percent from Wednesday. That means G.I. Joe Retaliation keeps the record for best Thursday in March ($10.5 million).

Batman v Superman is poised to benefit from the lack of major new movie releases this weekend. The film is projected to earn $59 million - $66 million in its second weekend. If it crosses $64.6 million, it will have the best second weekend box office of any pre-summer film, passing American Sniper.

Fearing the actions of a god-like Super Hero left unchecked, Gotham City's own formidable, forceful vigilante takes on Metropolis's most revered, modern-day savior, while the world wrestles with what sort of hero it really needs. And with Batman and Superman at war with one another, a new threat quickly arises, putting mankind in greater danger than it's ever known before.
