Gal Gadot Comments On Wonder Woman's U.N. Ambassador Controversy

It seems like Wonder Woman and the United Nations just can't get on the same page. Earlier this year, the two were getting along just fine. The DC Comics heroine had been named as the Honorary Ambassador for the Empowerment of Women and Girls. Wonder Woman was not the first pop culture icon to carry the title, but her reign has been the shortest. Not long ago after the U.N. conferred the title, hundreds of people began protesting the assignment, and their insistence led the U.N. to strip Wonder Woman of the title.

Now, Gal Gadot is speaking out about the insane controversy, and she's not inclined to hold back her feelings about the ordeal.

"There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you're protesting, seriously?" Gadot said about the backlash during a recent chat with TIME.

When people argue that Wonder Woman should 'cover up,' I don't quite get it. They say, 'If she's smart and strong, she can't also be sexy.' That's not fair. Why can't she be all of the above?"

Of course, Gadot is not the only baffled by the controversy. Protestors demanded Wonder Woman be removed from her honorary position because some felt it was inappropriate to have a busty white woman carry the torch. However, fans from around the world are now rallying behind Wonder Woman and emphasizing that her beauty in no way negates her inspirational history.

Already, there are dozens of online petitions running which ask the U.N. to reinstate Wonder Woman as an ambassador. Over on Change.org, Chloe Behrens has created a petition which asks for Wonder Woman to be reinstated as an ambassador.

"It has come to my attention that Wonder Woman has been removed from her role as ambassador for empowerment for the UN. A petition was signed by only 45,000 people wanting to dismiss her role. Their reasons are because 'she is a large breasted, white woman of impossible proportions, scantily clad in a shimmery, thigh-baring body suit.' Wonder Woman is so much more than appearances and this petition will hopefully prove the point. Wonder Woman is the embodiment of feminism, peace, justice, and truth. Anyone who knows the character knows that what she does advocates for the peace, freedom and rights of all people around the world, much like what the UN strives to do," the petition writes.

Courtney Simmons, a spokeswoman for DC Entertainment, also said, "Wonder Woman stands for peace, justice and equality, and for 75 years she has been a motivating force for many and will continue to be long after the conclusion of her UN Honorary Ambassadorship."
