Gotham Producer Addresses Harley Quinn's Possible Debut

Tonight, fans of Gotham will finally get to see the series return after an extended hiatus. The Fox drama will make an explosive comeback tonight thanks to the likes of Nygma's take on the Riddler. But, as the season moves forward, Gotham may pull strings behind-the-scenes to ensure another favorite villain makes their way to television. And, now, one of the show's executive producers is playing coy when it comes to the possible debut of Harley Quinn.

In an interview with CBR, Danny Cannon spoke about Gotham's return candidly, but he stopped short of answering any questions about Harley Quinn. The writer refused to say whether the vixen would make an overt appearance or not, but Cannon did hint that the Barbara Kean would undergo an evolution which may lend itself to such a reveal.

"I can't. I can't. All I can tell you is, the great thing, the joy of working with Erin is the range," Cannon told the site.

"The reason we changed her character, [is] because we knew what she could do. We're like, 'We can't keep you in one place. You've got to keep evolving.' So she's going to evolve again. That's all I can tell you."

In the past, actress Erin Richards has said conversations about Harley Quinn have taken place. The star even teased that Barbara will have a "massive character reveal" at the end of this season, perhaps signaling the start of Harley Quinn's reign. And, in the past, Richards did tell CinemaBlend the villain would fit right in with Gotham's current roster.

"Harley Quinn seems to like destruction for destruction's sake, and that's wonderful, but I feel like Barbara has more of a plan. She's a little bit more intellectual in her approach toward climbing the ladder and taking over the underworld. And I think if she was to then morph into Harley Quinn, there would have to be something that happened that sort of stripped away that kind of scheming side of her so that she would just become, I guess, unhinged in the world."

Richards continued, saying, "That madness and mayhem that comes along with The Joker, because obviously they're a team." Clearly, Gotham has plenty of mad storylines in its future, so it's not like Harley Quinn would be too out-of-place. In fact, the vixen might just fit right in.
